For those of you who feel the call of the Amazon rain forest and its indigenous people
The Pachamama Alliance
The first organization formed in response to the Achuar community’s reach to the modern world
The Pachamama Alliance has many programs with the Achuar people and other indigenous communities in the area, plus an ambitious campaign to help change the destructive habits of the industrialized world. Pachamama also arranges trips to Achuar territory.
Mission: To preserve the Earth’s tropical rain forests by empowering the indigenous people who are its natural custodians. To contribute to the creation of a new global vision of equity and sustainability for all.
“Crude Impact”
This beautifully done feature-length documentary film will give you a global perspective on the impact of oil on our lives. Chris Vernon of TheOilDrum.com called this award-winning production “a terrific film… the best documentary I have seen on the subject.”
Kapawi Ecolodge & Reserve
A marvelous place to stay in the heart of an old-growth tropical rain forest
A partnership between the Achuar people and the Ecuadorian tourism company Canodros, Kapawi incorporates buildings inspired by traditional local architecture. A trip into the rain forest with your Achuar guide is something you’ll never forget.
Amazon Watch
Another highly effective organization working to defend the environment and rights of indigenous people in the Amazon rain forest
Mission: To work with indigenous and environmental organizations in the Amazon Basin to defend the environment and advance indigenous peoples’ rights in the face of large-scale industrial development—oil and gas pipelines, power lines, roads, and other mega-projects.
Rainforest Action Network
Called “the most savvy environmental agitators in the business” by The Wall Street Journal
RAN uses hard-hitting marketing campaigns to align the policies of multinational corporations with widespread public support for environmental protection.
Mission: Rainforest Action Network campaigns for the forests, their inhabitants and the natural systems that sustain life by transforming the global marketplace through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action.
The Achuar People of Peru
The Achuar live on both sides of the border between Ecuador and Peru. Oil companies have been more of a problem to the Peruvian Achuar than to their Ecuadorian cousins. The Peruvian Achuar have an excellent web site in English.
